Independent Newspaper Intermediate Graphic Design
Brief: Use human-centered design methods to create an engaging and informative reading experience on the news of your choosing.
My Approach: The news I decided to cover in my paper was women’s sports. I wanted to give women’s sports as much coverage as men’s sports receive and give their fans a similar reading experience. The stories I chose were mostly from ESPNW and Just Women’s Sports, since those are serious news outlets that focus on the game, not any drama or gossip associated with the players. Even though my content was more serious, I wanted to reach a younger audience and get them excited about women’s sports the way they are about men’s. So, I kept the layout clean but added some fun, young design elements.
The original plan for this project was to print our newspapers on one large page and then cut and fold as needed. Unfortunately, we had some issues with the plotter and needed to pivot at the last minute. So, our final deliverables were mockups of the newspaper made from photos of the paper we would have printed on. Additionally, I created a mockup of my poster using a photo from pinterest.
